Survey

Right at the beginning of the project, we would like to know how much the school community in our schools knows about their natural heritage, geoparks in general and its own geopark. I.E.S. Campos de Amaya is in the area of Las Loras, which is not a geopark yet. The association ARGEOL is working hard to get Las Loras declared a geopark. The survey carried out by this school includes questions related to the area of Las Loras, as well as the work ARGEOL is doing.

The survey has a common part for all the school partners and some particular questions for each area.

CONCLUSIONS ON NATURAL HERITAGE

- Most people who answered the survey were students aged 10-18 students

- Around 2/3 of the people know what a geopark is and know one or some.

- Around 2/3 of the people who answered the survey have gone on trips /excursions with the objective to know a natural site.

- Landscape is what attracts most people when they go on a trip/excursion.

- Around 25% know remarkable geological elements in their surroundings

- Most people have taken a friend or a relative to know natural sites in their surroundings and/or have recommended them because they consider them tourist attractions.

CONCLUSIONS ON ANSWERS RELATED TO EACH GEOPARK

- Most people in Arouca and Lesbos know their own geopark. However only 20.6% of people who answered the survey in the Geopark of Haute Provence knew about its existence.

- A great percentage of people who answered the survey don't know the work that has been done to promote their own geopark.

- Most people think that the Geopark will have a signifcant impact on their region, except for the Haute Provence Geopark. In this case over half the population think it will be so.

At the moment this survey was carried out, Las Loras was working on their project to be declared a geopark, therefore the questions were different from those of the rest of the partners. These are some of the conclusion withdrawn then:

- Most people had heard about Las Loras project to become a geopark

- Over half the people knew that its geological  and cultural heritage was such that it had been fowarded to be declared a geopark by the UNESCO.

- Most people didn't know the work ARGEOL (Association for the Geological Reserve of Las Loras) was doing to promote Las Loras.

- Over half the people had heard about the work ARGEOL was doing to get Las Loras a geopark.

With this final survey we intend to check the impact that our project has had on our schools and local communities. The surveys will reveal if people from those communities are now more aware of the existence of a geopark in their territory and what it implies.

  3. The organizations that  promote the geoparks are well known by the schools and their local communities.
